About 3 months after purchasing a brand new Whirlpool Duet Sport washer and dryer at Lowes for $750 each, the dryer quit unexpectedly and flashed an error code of F-22.
It would take all day to accurately write what occurred over the next THREE WEEKS and FOUR SERVICE TRIPS (which obviously meant FOUR DAYS taken off of work) that it took to finally fix this issue, so I'll just summarize...
Day 1 - error code of F-22 (bad thermistor).
Day 4 - First Whirlpool (sub-contracted) technician arrives, replaces original thermistor, still doesn't work. Diagnoses a bad control panel, which will take a week to order.
Day 10 - Second technician arrives, replaces entire control board. Dryer works for 10 minutes then gives same error code. Orders another control board (?) which will take 4 days on "emergency order".
Day 14 - Third technician arrives (different company, still sent by Whirlpool) with control board. Still doesn't work (I could have told him that), so through process of elimination he diagnoses a bad wiring harness, which will take 4 days to order on "emergency order".
Day 20 - Fourth service call, same tech as third service call, luckily, arrives with the wiring harness. He spends a couple hours taking apart the entire dryer to replace every wiring connection in the unit. The big dryer drum itself was rolling around my living room, as he virtually stripped the dryer down to an empty metal box. And finally... success!
So after 3 weeks of not being able to do laundry, despite having spent $1,500 on new laundry machines just 3 months earlier, the dryer is finally fixed and operating correctly again (so far, anyway)!
It's just amazing to me that they (Lowes or Whirlpool) didn't simply replace the unit after a couple attempts to fix it. I made several calls in an effort to receive a replacement, but Lowes said their hands were tied because it was beyond their 30 day return period, and Whirlpool said their only responsibility was to fix it under the manufacturer's warranty. Which they did, admittedly, but it took 3 weeks and 4 days taken off of work for them to fix it for "free".
I will never buy another Whirlpool appliance of any sort! |
Mistake!

I bought the whirlpool duet washer and dryer 5 years ago based on the brand name and, quite frankly, how terrific the set looked. Mistake!
They have had to be serviced multiple times ... the dryer takes 90 minutes to dry a load ... the computer sensor on the dryer broke about a year after purchase and we can now only use timed drying (or pay over $400 to replace computer board!) ... the plastic handles have broken off both the washer and the dryer --- all in all, poor quality, and very poor customer support from whirlpool. |
